The amazing sea of Abkhazia
Abkhazia is located between the large mountain range of the Caucasus and the Black Sea. Despite its small size, the country has an impressive coastline. More than 200 kilometers of sea surf and salty wind have a tangible effect on the country’s climate, softening it with moisture and cool breezes. Gagra, Sukhumi, Gudauta, Pitsunda offer vacationers not only an extensive program of sightseeing trips in Abkhazia, huge dendrological parks with unique vegetation and wellness programs in sanatoriums. The main advantage of this region is the sea, specific and unlike any other sea in the world!
First of all, it is worth mentioning the cleanliness of the sea off the coast of Abkhazia. Here it is the cleanest. Neither the coasts near Yalta and Anapa, nor the Black Sea resorts of Turkey can go into comparison. In July and August, the water in the sea warms up to +28 degrees, while the level of salinity of the sea water is two times lower than, for example, in the Mediterranean Sea. For this reason, swimming and diving off the coast of Abkhazia is comfortable, especially for children.
An important fact about the Black Sea is the absence of dangerous aquatic inhabitants here. No need to be afraid of sea urchins or stinging jellyfish. They are not here. Of course, jellyfish can be seen at sea, but usually they are washed ashore after storms. They are not dangerous. But those who wish can “hunt” on the piers for small crabs and collect Black Sea mussels.
The poverty of the animal world in the sea does not allow to feel the charm of scuba diving. The deeper the swim, the less animals can be seen. It is much more interesting to snorkel off the coast. However, there is a wonderful alternative to traditional underwater landscapes with corals and colorful fish in Abkhazia. Lakes Ritsa and Goluboye offer deep-sea diving in the freshwater world of underwater plants and animals with clear water and a very unusual atmosphere. Sea lovers can also make a number of dives at ancient sunken Roman settlements near Sukhumi, Pitsunda or New Athos.
Not only bright inhabitants and unusual plants cannot be seen in the sea, but fish are not densely off the coast of Abkhazia, especially in summer. During the heat season, the water heats up very much, and the fish goes to a depth. At local fishermen fishing begins only with the first cold snap, from the end of September, and lasts until May. In the cold season, flounder, mullet, red mullet, katran and crucian carp go out in shallow water. All the goodies go to local markets and restaurants where you can taste delicious dishes from all these types of fish.
